Captain Ben Cowley is an expert in outdoor adventure and fun. Originally from Los Altos, California, he has been fishing, camping, adventuring and exploring since before he can remember. He has been a sponsored surfer, spearfisherman, and fisherman and ultimately settled into his mountain life after 14 years abroad living in Mainland Mexico. He is a US Coast Guard licensed 100ton captain and licensed fishing guide and has captained everything from 20ft pangas in Mexico to 85ft Luxury Yachtfishers. Lake Tahoe however has always been his end game, the place he spent his summers as a kid and learned the love of nature. His two kids Mahana and Kai are always by his side and training to take over the business so dad can go goof off.
Mahana has been following her dad on fishing trips since she was 3 months old. Already with hundreds of hours of sea time, she has caught everything from marlin to bluegill. When she's not in school or on another adventure, she often accompanies her dad when there are younger kids on the trips. She aspires to one day take over as captain.
As a 7th generation Tahoe native, there‘s nobody more passionate about the lake and it’s surroundings. Uncle Jimbo’s great great grandfather was the very first Fish and Game Warden in Lake Tahoe. Not only is he great at putting you on the fish but he will have you rolling with his stories and enthusiasm. By the end of your trip he will be your Uncle Jimbo too.

Fishing for the exotic Mackinaw or Lake Trout. These guys hang out in big schools on the bottom of Lake Tahoe and grow to enormous sizes. The lake record is 37lbs and was over 48" long! Fishing techniques vary daily according to the bite. Trolling downriggers and jigging with live minnows are the two most popular.
During certain months of the year, the fishing for Rainbow and Brown trout can be excellent. Generally this is trolling Rapala style lures in the shallows around the edges of the lake. There are many trophies out there waiting to be caught.
All fishing passengers 16 or over must have in possession a current CA or NV fishing license. One day or yearly licenses are available online at wildlife.ca.gov or ndow.org.
This is our most popular trip. We start out by dropping crawdad traps and then it’s on to explore the lake. The adventure includes paddlebording through pristine granite boulder coves, snorkeling for lost treasure, boulder jumping and lounging in the sun on the roof of the boat. Once we’ve gotten that out of the way we go back for our crawdad traps and drop down some live bait to fish for the large mackinaw or lake trout that inhabit the depths of Tahoe. Drinks and snacks are provided.
This is the kids’ favorite trip. Packed with high energy fun. The great thing about the lake is that there is always somewhere new to go. Discover the secret swim in only hot springs. Go jump off a boulder. Paddleboard the shoreline. Soak in some rays on Bonsai Island. The opportunities are endless. Fishing, and crawdad catching are included. Drinks, snacks, towels and all gear included. Recommend bringing lunch or can be provided upon request.
